Google Earth Number of Downloads |

Well, I still remember the day when I was introduced to this unique tool – Google Earth. At first, when my friend told me about it, I laughed over it that theirs such a tool on the Internet which can locate and show your very own home and may be click pictures of it. It appeared to me as a fantasy. But all thanks to Google which has always been successful in making such dreams true.

Today, while covering this post, when I came across this Google update, I feel no wonder in saying that this tool is being used by one billion people world-wide. Google made a wonderful video depicting the achievement. Have a look:

Some fast facts about Google Earth:

  • The present Google Earth was not started by Google. It earlier used to be another company – KeyHole Inc, before being acquired by Google in 2004.
  • You can make your own map in Google Earth.
  • You can also see beneath the surface at times. Actually, there is a layers feature which can be enabled at disabled according to choice.
  • The satellite images you see are not of today, but are of sometime back. Some are even 3 years old.
  • You can also view other planets using Google Earth.
  • A professor in Perth used the service to find ancient tombs and geolyphs dating back to 2000 years ago in Egypt. He achieved this feat from Perth itself. Another professor used Google Earth to scan thousands of kilometres of Saudi Arabia and Jordan. Find more information here.
