1.58 Lakh Units of Tablets Sold in India in 9 Months [Research] |

According to a research study carried by Cybermedia Research, the Indian tablet market witnessed huge sales of tablet computers, to the tune of 1.5 Lakh Units or .15 million units in the period from October 2010 to June 2011.

Here’s what Mr. Anirban Banerjee, Associate Vice-President, Research and Advisory Services of Cybermedia Research had to say:

Tablets provide touch based user experience with a convenient screen size for web surfing, content consumption and entertainment. Moreover, portability, ease of use and wireless connectivity ‘on-the-go’ make the tablet an even more attractive buy.

Some of the key findings of the research are:

  • The research study shows that people gave preference to 3G enabled tablets than to the ones having Wi-Fi, as the 3G and Wi-Fi sold proportion was 70:30.
  • Samsung emerged as the best selling Tablet brand in India during the three quarters ending June 2011 mainly beacuse of the price-drop in its tablets.
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab was the first major brand to come to India, followed by Apple’s iPad in January 2011. The first tablet to launch in India was the lesser-known Olivepad, which was launched in July 2010.
  • Currently, there are 27 tablet models in India from 10 different companies. This has led to high-level of competition in the tablet space and better choices for the consumer.

Here’s a look at the market share taken by tablet manufacturing companies in India during this period:

SamsungOctober 201045.8%
RIMJune 201121.0%
AppleJanuary 201118.4%
Others14.8%

As seen, Samsung is the leader with a whopping 45 percent market share. RIM with its Playbook has captured 21 percent of the market share till June 2011. Apple, in just 6 months of its launch was able to create a domain for itself by surging with 18.4 percent of the market share. These numbers would definitely vary as we’d take a look at the period from July 2011 to now. My take is that during this period Apple would have beaten all others as per market share is concerned. What’s your take?

Also, Cybermedia Research predicts that the majority of tablets going to be launched now will be in the price range of Rs 7000 – Rs 15000. How true that prediction came out when Amazon launched its Kindle Fire for a price of $ 199 i.e. around Rs 8000. When shipped to India, the Kindle Fire will cost around Rs 11000. The research pariod saw tablets priced from Rs 8000 to Rs 47000 being launched.
